My Pet Troll

Pet Troll

I have a pet troll now. He’s very loyal and determined. Sadly, he’s not house-trained. He doesn’t know how to follow instructions or to do things on his own, especially the more complex tasks. He likes to follow at my heels, nipping my ankles, and often lashes out merely in frustration and rage. Occasionally, he’ll lunge hit-and-run style, just to let me know he’s around. Most of the time, however, he just lurks in the shadows, waiting and watching. When I least expect it, he’ll dart out unexpectedly and bite hard, and then he’ll skulk back into the shadows again. If I feed him, his voraciousness grows; if I ignore…

My Smile Game Builder Experiments

Smile Game Builder

For awhile I’ve tweeted about Smile Game Builder and my foray into the new RPG Maker. So I decided to conglomerate them into a single post to save time and space. This serves a dual purpose. Not only does it showcase various features of Smile Game Builder, it also shows my beta-testing experiments. These aren’t in any particular order. In many cases, I tried to customize graphics as part of the experimentation. Some of it went well, some of it didn’t. Custom Title Experiment The title screen resolution in Smile Game Builder is 960×544. I created this with the first beta build I tested. The cursor is also custom-made for…

Smile Game Builder – Upcoming RPG Maker

Smile Game Builder

Many of my Twitter followers already know that it’s my privilege and honour to beta-test a new upcoming RPG Maker called Smile Game Builder (SGB). Beta Phase This RPG Maker shows a lot of potential. Its selling point is the 3D first-person perspective and its complete ease of use. You can also use 2D graphics if you prefer. Set up events with a few easy clicks and then modify them to suit your needs or tweak them for more advanced processes. During its beta phase, I’ve only tweeted select things. These include articles and material already made public and my own experiments with SGB. I’m pushing the engine almost to…

Google+ Social Media Buttons Update

Social Media Buttons Plugin v1.7

The Social Media Buttons/In-Game Website Plugin is now at Version 1.7. (I should really shorten its title.) I added support for sharing your Google+ accounts. And also tweaked the buttons for dynamic positioning, depending on which ones you use. Future Updates Notes Although this plugin remains unfinished, most likely, there won’t be any further updates for awhile. From Version 2.0 (the final version), I expect no further updates. While it IS possible to add in the option to share an in-game screenshot and content from within RMMV, it’s not as easy as it may sound. This isn’t necessarily from a developer’s perspective, but from the end-user perspective. I don’t want…

Windowskins and Other Sections Updates

Windowskins Awhile ago, RPG Maker Times had its own windowskins subdomain, but it merged with the main blog. The main reason for that in the first place was actually because it of its shared server. Downtime was frequent as a result, sometimes for hours. I was usually unaware of the downtime. The previous web host wasn’t at fault. It was the price of having a website steadily increasing in popularity on a shared server. Kind of like a baby outgrowing its diapers. So I had to make a decision and find somewhere else more suited to the blog’s needs. And, since changing to Dreamhost and upgrading to a VPS, downtime…

Ready To Go Medieval? New RPG Maker Packs!

RPG Maker Web has released some new DLCs, this time with a medieval theme! https://t.co/OosfggUsZo Three new packs ready to help you go positively Medieval on your game! pic.twitter.com/oCceMSevkr — RPG Maker Web (@RPGmakerweb) July 16, 2016 How about some medieval Knights Templar character sets? Pioneer Valley Games has released one, expanding their medieval theme, including interior tilesets. Or how about some medieval music to match? Joel Steudler has done a very good job on composing 20 medieval pieces (5 Battle, 4 Dungeon, 3 Field, 3 Theme, and 5 Town) using period musical instruments, such as the lute, recorder, and harpsichord. And I do really like this collection. The final…

New Plugin: Randomize Title/Loading/Game Over Images Plugin (RMMV)

RPG Maker MV Plugins

The Randomize Title/Loading/Game Over Images Plugin displays random Title Screen, Game Over and Loading screen images. Origins This plugin originally comprised three separate plugins that merged into one, as it made more sense to do so. I originally wrote the Randomize Loading… Image plugin specifically for The Adventures of Tryggr. I scheduled the Randomize Title Screen Bg plugin for integration into my Title Screen Add-On plugin, but I decided last minute not to include it and wrote it as a separate plugin. The Randomize Game Over Bg plugin was first inspired by the Randomize Loading… Image plugin specifically for the multiple endings in Otherworld, where I tweaked it for the…

Why Don’t I Release Many Scripts/Plugins?

RPG Maker Times Blog

People have asked this question so many times over the years, but I never really gave any direct answers. I figured that it wasn’t that important. Finally, I decided to answer it exclusively on RPG Maker MV (quite a while ago now). This is an updated, tweaked version of that blog entry. It mostly has to do with confidence. Back in the 2K/3 days, I was one of the most confident people you’d know. I had a blog – surprisingly popular in its own way – with the first comprehensive event commands tutorial online. Sadly, though, that was fairly short-lived because the web host I was using at the time…

New 2016 Layout for RPG Maker Times

RPG Maker Times Blog

Regular visitors will now see a completely different layout than the one I had in place for years! It was time for a change. I’ve been wanting to do this for quite some time, so finally decided to tackle it. Over the course of the next few days (notably on my days off) I’ll continue working on the layout to completion. This may be slower than I’d like because I’m also working on other projects too – it’s all about proper time management, not exactly my forte – but in the end it’ll be worth it. After its completion, I’m also going to be posting a lot more project progress….

All Projects Updates

RPG Maker Times Projects

While updates have been few and far between because of the usual suspects (work, chores and other projects), there have been plenty of updates as far as RPG Maker is concerned. To prevent further stagnation, on some of my days off I’ll be writing and scheduling several posts so that they can be spread out over the week. And I’ll try to be as consistent as possible with them. Topics will range from plugins (both my own and others’) to games to news. All RPG Maker related, of course! Newly released resources from RPG Maker Web will also be posted. Any updates on the projects I’m working on will be…
