Zelda Forest Maze Demo – Smile Game Builder (Beta)

Smile Game Builder

Remember the Lost Woods forest maze in The Legend of Zelda (NES)? Demo for Smile Game Builder This is a workable variation of it in Smile Game Builder. It was an experiment in an early build to see if it could be done. This is loosely based on an RMXP tutorial I did awhile ago. Here’s the result: At some point in the future, I’ll do a full tutorial on how to do this in Smile Game Builder. That is, after I’ve ironed out a few bugs.

Major Updates Catchup

I’ve been totally remiss with updates on RPG Maker Times. I’m not going to make excuses for this, but will say that these past few months have been extremely busy with work, various projects and side-projects and a bout of serious flu. This doesn’t mean that I’ve been entirely inactive with RPG Maker itself. In fact, the opposite applies. RPG Maker MV Plugins Most of my attention has been on RPG Maker MV, so let’s start with some of the new RMMV plugins I’ve created. A number of the plugins I did release before being updated here were placed on the RPG Maker MV Forum I’m a member of. Otherworld…

Bringing Tutorials Up-to-Date

Finally, I’ve started bringing all the tutorials on the site up-to-date, starting with the Final Fantasy Mystic Quest Battlefield System Tutorial (now including a downloadable demo). Over the next few weeks at least, I’ll try and continue bringing the rest of the Tutorials & How-To’s up-to-date as well. Because I recently found a lot of RPG Maker things, it’s been quite useful for re-creating the tutorials, many of which I thought had been lost. I’ll go through each of them, one by one, and gradually bring them all up-to-date; this might take a while so it could spread over the course of a few months.

Wulf’s Choice Award – Coming Soon

With so many good quality games and software available for RPG Maker, both commercial and non-commercial, I decided to create the Wulf’s Choice Award. Not only is this to give games creators recognition for all their hard work, but also to provide them with kudos for well-crafted RPG Maker games. I’m still working on the "ratings system", with which I’m aiming to give a fair assessment of the key areas involved: graphics, sound/music, gameplay, storyline, scripts and additional features (such as mini-games and side-objectives) for games, and functionality, features, usefulness and presentation for utilities. Along with either a mini-review or a full review, the Wulf’s Choice Award will be given…

Betrayal At Krondor Wordlock Script

Download Here For those who have played Betrayal At Krondor will know precisely what a "Wordlock" is. For those that don’t, it’s basically a chest (or door) locked by a riddle and they will only open once the correct word has been entered. Once upon a time, I tried recreating the wordlocks in RM2K3, but encountered a few difficulties given its limitations. Everything had to be set up using Events and Common Events, including creating a customized menu specifically for entering the words. It was a nightmare. However, now one exists for RMVX, thanks to the awesome talent of Modern Algebra. I’ve tried this script and, trust me, it is…

Woodcutting Tutorial – RM2K3

Woodcutting DemoThe link to the demois no longer available here. This is how to create a basic woodcutting process in RM2K3, similar to that used in Runescape, but without the experience points gained. Using the “defaults” from a new Project, first create two common items: Handaxe and Logs. Also, create a variable to store the number of logs chopped. In this example, 0001:Wood. Next, create a map and place a few events on it, setting the event graphics to trees. Make sure you name each one differently, as each one also has a matching switch. For this tutorial, I created 4 “tree events”, named Tree1, Tree2, Tree3 and Tree4. Create…

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest Battlefield System Tutorial

RPG Maker 2K3 Logo

This tutorial teaches how to set up a multi battle system similar to the one used in Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, where you can clear out certain areas (represented by crossed swords in the game). It’s a simple method that can easily be adapted for your game. For convenience, the demo can be downloaded for quicker installation and study. This is a complete project, including the RTP, so it is quite large. You can extract it directly into your RM2K3 Projects folder. The Final Fantasy Mystic Quest Battlefield System Tutorial, along with the downloadable demo, can be viewed here.

Blue Mage Skill Tutorial — Random Target

This is an expansion of the Blue Magic Skill tutorial, but instead of targeting monsters in sequence (i.e. starting with the first monster then going onto the next after that monster is slain), we can create a routine where the target is randomly chosen. This is how we create a random target for our Blue Mage skill.

Blue Mage Skill Tutorial — Method I

RPG Maker 2K3 Logo

The most common tutorial I’m asked for is for a "Blue Mage" skill. For those that don’t know, it’s a job class from the Final Fantasy series, where characters can learn enemy skills. Blue Mages were introduced in Final Fantasy V, which I absolutely love as much as I love the Blue Mage skill itself. I saw Momonja’s tutorial from RPG2K Net (under redevelopment at the time of writing) on Blue Magic and decided to "tweak" it slightly and improve upon it. So how do you emulate this job class? Well, there are actually several methods. Here is one of the methods on how to create a Blue Mage Skill…
