The Gladiator Project – An Old Game Revisited

The Gladiator Project

Six years ago today, The Gladiator Project was actively in development for RPG Maker. It was an ambitious project, based on my personal interest in and fascination with the Roman Empire. Sadly, for various reasons, I abandoned the project. And there it remains, gathering dust. So What Happened? The Gladiator Project was first developed for RMXP, based on its original hack-and-slash concept for RM2K3, but highly expanded. It then migrated to RMVX, where further expansion took place (including customized graphics). To begin with, I wasn’t very competent at RGSS and frequently lurked in forums to try and learn from others’ scripts. I eventually emerged from the shadows to ask how…

Spring Cleaning and Renovation

RPG Maker Times Blog

After my previous post, Neglected But Not Forgotten, I started thinking. Since yesterday was officially the First Day of Spring, I figured it was time to spring-clean the site. Careful Consideration After carefully considering on the best course of action for this, I decided to drop support for 2K3 and XP. These two RPG Makers seem less predominant nowadays, and besides I no longer actively use them. While some game developers may still use them, according to general statistics, their usage is less frequent in favor of VX, VX Ace and MV. Hence, the decision. Most of the current posts containing references to 2K3 and XP will remain intact. However,…

Neglected But Not Forgotten

Pretitle Movie Snapshot

Sadly, I’ve neglected this blog, but haven’t forgotten about it. It’s constantly in the back of my mind. I frequently entertain grand notions that one day I’ll uber-update it with all the latest RPG Maker news. This includes my own RPG Maker related projects. Unfortunately, this never seems to happen. This isn’t because of lack of commitment or dedication, however; it’s simply that I don’t have enough time. Since I usually work three nights out of the week, this leaves me four days to work on various projects. Actually, essentially it’s three days because I take a day off to rest and recuperate, and catch up on some well-needed sleep….

Google+ Social Media Buttons Update

Social Media Buttons Plugin v1.7

The Social Media Buttons/In-Game Website Plugin is now at Version 1.7. (I should really shorten its title.) I added support for sharing your Google+ accounts. And also tweaked the buttons for dynamic positioning, depending on which ones you use. Future Updates Notes Although this plugin remains unfinished, most likely, there won’t be any further updates for awhile. From Version 2.0 (the final version), I expect no further updates. While it IS possible to add in the option to share an in-game screenshot and content from within RMMV, it’s not as easy as it may sound. This isn’t necessarily from a developer’s perspective, but from the end-user perspective. I don’t want…

Windowskins and Other Sections Updates

Windowskins Awhile ago, RPG Maker Times had its own windowskins subdomain, but it merged with the main blog. The main reason for that in the first place was actually because it of its shared server. Downtime was frequent as a result, sometimes for hours. I was usually unaware of the downtime. The previous web host wasn’t at fault. It was the price of having a website steadily increasing in popularity on a shared server. Kind of like a baby outgrowing its diapers. So I had to make a decision and find somewhere else more suited to the blog’s needs. And, since changing to Dreamhost and upgrading to a VPS, downtime…

Restructuring/Updating Scripts/Plugins Pages

Restructuring/Updating Scripts/Plugins Pages

I’m in the process of restructuring the way that files are downloaded from RPG Maker Times, particularly in the RMMV/JGSS section. This is in light of something that I completely overlooked and recently discovered. Previously, RMMV has been downloadable from Pastebin. However, due to the way that Pastebin saves the files this has been causing problems with the plugins. I’ll be removing Pastebin from the download options and providing alternative download files: Directly from RPG Maker Times and from Dropbox. These will be ZIP’d to include the Terms of Use for each plugin. Some plugins will also be downloadable from RPG Maker MV as well; these will link directly to…

My First Foray into RPG Maker MV

Well, I’ve had my first foray into RPG Maker MV. At this point, I’m not sure if I’m entirely ready to be converted (yet!). I’m more fluent in Javascript than Ruby, so once I wrap my head around how everything is structured in MV, I might be able to write some scripts. Unlike with VXA, however, where classes, modules, etc. are separated to make scripting easier, you’d be able to go into, say, Window_Base and edit (or alias) certain things directly. In MV, however, things are bundled together into several core JS files; some settings are scattered throughout. This makes it more difficult to find specific classes until and unless…

Countdown to RPG Maker MV

There’s only two days left before the "official" launch of RPG Maker MV and I’m getting excited! This means that, since I preordered it from the start, it’ll be readily available on 23 October, 2015, at 10:00 PDT. The biggest advantage is that I actually have the day off from work, so I will start playing around with it almost immediately. And I’m confident enough in my Javascripting skills that I can eventually start on some plugins of my own. In fact, I’ve been going through a refresher course on Codecademy. It’s easier than I thought it would be; although it’s been quite some time since I wrote anything in…

RPG Maker Times Facebook Page Reopened

The RPG Maker Times Facebook page has officially been reopened after a long hiatus and it has been renamed RPG Maker Times & Projects. The decision was made primarily because, with the upcoming release of RPG Maker MV (which I’ve preordered and am quite excited about), it’s going to be an important additional asset. Not only that, it’ll be a platform for blogsite and project, particularly when the relaunch of The Gladiator Project is announced for RPG Maker MV. Updates for my RMVXA project, Otherworld, will also be posted there, along with other news about RPG Maker and game development.

RPG Maker MV Preorder & Release Date

RPG Maker MV

RPG Maker MV is being released on October 23, 2015. You can preorder your copy with a 10% discount and two bonus packs: the Cover Art Characters Pack and the MV Essentials Set. Steam or non-Steam keys will be available when RPG Maker MV is officially released. The preorder cost (with the discount) is a princely $71.99, but to me (based on what I’ve seen so far) it’s worth it! RPG Maker MV Official Trailer What Makes RPG Maker MV Exciting Previous RPG Makers (from 2K to VXA) have only been limited to Windows only. However, RPG Maker MV can now be used on both Windows and Mac machines. Not…
