My Pet Troll

Pet Troll

I have a pet troll now. He’s very loyal and determined. Sadly, he’s not house-trained. He doesn’t know how to follow instructions or to do things on his own, especially the more complex tasks. He likes to follow at my heels, nipping my ankles, and often lashes out merely in frustration and rage. Occasionally, he’ll lunge hit-and-run style, just to let me know he’s around. Most of the time, however, he just lurks in the shadows, waiting and watching. When I least expect it, he’ll dart out unexpectedly and bite hard, and then he’ll skulk back into the shadows again. If I feed him, his voraciousness grows; if I ignore…

Professional Jealousy Trolls

Armed & Dangerous - Trolls and Game Development

I happened across an article on Reddit. Quite by accident, I might add. I was looking for something else and the article entitled Have You Had Any Jealousy Breakouts When You See Other People’s Games Succeed? piqued my curiosity. Green-Eyed Monster In Your Closet As I started reading, the poster’s words resonated with me. Not because I’m jealous as such, but because I used to feel the same way. He goes on to say that some game developers seem to have more success than others and are upvoted more. Some, like him, have minimal success and more downvotes. There could be any number of reasons why this would happen. It…

How Much RPG Maker Trivia Can You Answer?

RPG Maker Web presented this question on Twitter. And, of course, I tried it, curious to see just how much I know about RPG Maker because I have been involved with it since RM95, after all! (That makes me feel so old now!) https://t.co/sckhIIQ5aE How much #RPGMaker Trivia can you answer? pic.twitter.com/PZFPoLhRIj — RPG Maker Web (@RPGmakerweb) July 9, 2016 My Result: 90% I overlooked just one fine detail. Hint: Forget about transparency! RT @RPGmakerweb I'm an #RPGMaker Geek! 😊 I got 90%! What's your score?! I started with #RM95, been using it since! https://t.co/52ezkwUIKP — RPG Maker Times (@CompanionWulf) July 10, 2016 And, so, why not try it? If…

Trolls and Game Development

Armed & Dangerous - Trolls and Game Development

Trolls and game development go hand in hand, it seems, and there’s really no escaping it. The reasons behind trolling aren’t that important. The knock-on effects – especially on new or independent game developers – are! Rating, No Comment For many indie gamedevs (myself included), one of the major frustrations is the lack of proper comments accompanying ratings. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinions, of course, so they have the right to comment on the game, as not every game will appeal to every player. It’s a matter of personal taste or preference. So, with this in mind, it’s inevitable that a game’s ratings will be affected by this diversity…

Happy New Year 2016

Another year has flown by, but that means another year of opportunity, with new ventures, new goals and new games! Happy Christmas 2015

Happy Christmas 2015 from RPG Maker Times (however you celebrate it) and a happier game-dev New Year! The winners of the Design A Logo Contest were notified of their prizes; I just haven’t had the time to update on the site yet. I will in the New Year!

Don’t Feed The Trolls!

If when I mention the word "troll", you’re thinking about the supernatural beings in Norse mythology or Scandinavian folklore, Tolkien’s trolls that turned to stone after sunlight, the prodigiously strong and incredibly stupid trolls from Harry Potter, or even the cutesy trolls (think Pabbie the troll king) in the Disney movie Frozen, then these are not the kinds of trolls I’m referring to. Trolls are everywhere! I’m on about Internet Trolls, who sow the seeds of their discord on the Internet by posting inflammatory messages, inciting arguments designed to upset people and provoke emotional responses, and otherwise greatly disparaging others’ efforts and hard work. Internet Trolls are not a new…

Exporting RPG Maker Games To iPhone, Android, Etc.

Exporting RPG Maker games to iPhone, Android and other platforms is perhaps one of the most requested features for developers and users alike. This is especially true with the rise in popularity of "mobile" devices, such as phones and tablets. As a result technology demands further needs for exporting RPG Maker games to these formats. It’s been tried and tested, of course, with some measured success, especially with RPG Maker (XP, VX and VX Ace) working to some degree on Linux/Ubuntu. A direct port of any RPG Maker to other platforms has too many technical problems to make it viable, especially since it uses Windows-reliant technology to run. There are…
